‘Ad: strength without humility

Hud is sent to ‘Ad and calls them to worship Allah alone. Their chiefs accuse him of foolishness and falsehood. He answers that he is a messenger and a trustworthy adviser. The Qur’an remembers their strength and their position after Nuh’s people, placing their material advantages beside the obligation to be grateful.
Surah Ash-Shu‘ara describes impressive construction and harsh exercise of power. Hud questions a way of life in which buildings and force suggest that the people expect to live forever. His call concerns the moral use of strength as well as belief.
The account supplies the name of the people and the features of their arrogance. It does not identify a modern ruin as Hud’s settlement or give the measurements of their bodies. The illustrated rock landscape conveys atmosphere without presenting speculative archaeology as fact. Remember the contrast between their confidence in power and Hud’s call to the One who granted it.
