CHAPTER 01

Worship and honest trade

Illustrative environment; not a reconstruction of this episode
Conceptual artwork · No prophet is depicted

Shu‘ayb calls the people of Madyan to worship Allah and to give full measure and weight. They are told not to deprive others of what belongs to them or spread corruption. The message joins belief with economic conduct, making clear that deception in everyday trade is not a separate matter of no religious significance.

The people enjoy material advantages, but Shu‘ayb warns against a punishment that could encompass them. A gain obtained through wrongdoing is not made legitimate by its size or by a community’s acceptance of the practice. He also warns against obstructing those who seek the path of Allah.

The account helps readers imagine a community through its transactions rather than through a speculative portrait of its buildings. The principal issue is what happens at the scale, in the marketplace, and in the use of influence. Worship, fair dealing, and freedom from coercive obstruction form one connected call.
