A CLOSER READING

Understand Yahya’s account

Wisdom, purity, devotion, and kindness to parents.

An answer to Zakariyya’s prayer

Yahya’s story begins within his father’s supplication and the announcement of a son. Al ‘Imran describes him in terms of distinction, restraint, and prophethood among the righteous. His collection should be read alongside Zakariyya’s while preserving Yahya’s own explicitly praised character.

Knowledge joined to tenderness

Surah Maryam commands Yahya to hold firmly to the Scripture and describes wisdom given in childhood. It also mentions tenderness, purity, and mindfulness of Allah. This combination prevents a narrow picture of learning as information alone: the narrated virtues include moral sensitivity and conduct.

Conduct within the household

The same passage praises kindness to his parents and denies that he was arrogant or disobedient. It concludes with peace on the day of his birth, death, and resurrection. The Qur’an does not use this passage to narrate the manner of his death, so later accounts must not be silently substituted for its wording.
