Speaking with his father

Surah Maryam introduces Ibrahim as truthful and a prophet, then records his conversation with his father. He questions worship directed toward what cannot hear, see, or benefit its worshipper. He offers guidance and warns about following Satan, addressing his father with repeated tenderness.
His father responds with a threat and tells him to leave. Ibrahim answers peacefully and withdraws from the worship practiced around him. The passage does not reduce faithfulness to either harsh confrontation or surrender to family pressure: it shows respectful speech joined to a clear religious boundary.
The Qur’an later explains the limit of Ibrahim’s request for forgiveness for his father. His earlier promise does not establish an unrestricted rule when the father’s opposition becomes clear. Read the two passages together. This family conversation is an important beginning to Ibrahim’s collection because his mission reaches into intimate relationships before the larger confrontations with his people.
