CHAPTER 04

A ruler’s argument and a question about resurrection

Illustrative environment; not a reconstruction of this episode
Conceptual artwork · No prophet is depicted

The Qur’an describes a man who disputes with Ibrahim because Allah has granted him kingship. When Ibrahim speaks of his Lord giving life and death, the ruler claims that power for himself. Ibrahim then points to Allah bringing the sun from the east and challenges him to bring it from the west. The disbeliever is confounded. The passage does not name this ruler.

A separate episode describes Ibrahim asking how Allah gives life to the dead. He affirms his belief and seeks reassurance of the heart. Allah instructs him concerning four birds and calling them after placing portions on hills. The account ends by recalling Allah’s might and wisdom.

Placed together for learning, the episodes contrast arrogant argument with a believing request to understand. They are not presented as one continuous incident. Questions can express very different dispositions: a desire to resist truth or a desire for greater assurance within faith.
