CHAPTER 12

Learning with the servant of Allah

Illustrative environment; not a reconstruction of this episode
Conceptual artwork · No prophet is depicted

Musa travels with his attendant until they reach the meeting point connected with a lost fish. He encounters a servant given mercy and knowledge by Allah and asks to accompany him in order to learn. The servant warns that Musa will not be able to remain patient with what he cannot comprehend and asks him not to question until explanation is given.

Three events follow: damage to a boat, the killing of a boy, and repair of a wall in a town that refused hospitality. Musa objects, and the companionship ends with explanations concerning each act. The servant states that he did not act on his own initiative.

The Qur’an does not name the servant in the passage; the authenticated narration identifies him as Al-Khidr. The story does not authorize ordinary people to imitate such actions on claims of hidden knowledge. Its lesson concerns the limits of Musa’s immediate understanding and the specific knowledge Allah granted in this account.
