At the water of Madyan

Musa reaches the water of Madyan and sees people watering their animals. Two women hold back their flock, explaining that they wait until the shepherds have finished and that their father is elderly. Musa waters for them and withdraws into shade, praying in need of whatever good Allah may send him.
One of the women returns to invite him to her father. After hearing Musa’s account, the father reassures him that he has escaped the unjust people. A daughter recommends employing him, citing strength and trustworthiness. The father offers marriage to one of his daughters in return for an agreed period of work, with eight years required and ten optional.
The Qur’an does not name this father as Shu‘ayb. That identification is discussed in later accounts and is not assumed here. The chapter’s themes are direct and practical: consideration for others, work, refuge, trustworthiness, and an agreement made clear between the parties.
