The covenant and the calf

Musa attends the appointed meeting with his Lord and receives the tablets. During his absence, people are led into worship of a calf. Harun warns them that it is a trial and calls them to obey him, but many insist on continuing until Musa returns.
Musa returns in anger and grief. He confronts the people, questions Harun, and questions the Samiri. Harun explains that he feared division and was overpowered, not that he approved the worship. Musa rejects the calf and renews the assertion that Allah alone is the true object of worship.
The account shows how quickly a rescued community can fail in its response to blessing. It also shows the difficulty faced by a leader left among people who resist him. The episode should not be used to erase Harun’s warning or invent guilt beyond the source. Deliverance, covenant, failure, and return all belong within Musa’s story.
