Recognition and forgiveness

The brothers return in hardship and appeal for supplies and charity. Yusuf asks whether they remember what they did to Yusuf and his brother when they were ignorant. They recognize him, and he confirms his identity, naming the favor Allah has shown and linking the outcome with reverence for Allah and patience.
They acknowledge that Allah has preferred him and that they were wrong. Yusuf answers without reproach that day and asks forgiveness for them, invoking Allah’s mercy. He sends his shirt to their father and instructs them to bring the household to him.
The reveal fulfills the promise made when Yusuf was at the well. Yet the culmination is not triumph displayed through revenge. Power permits him to respond to people who once treated him as disposable, and he chooses forgiveness. The story does not require the reader to deny the wrong in order to recognize the generosity of this response.
