CHAPTER 02

Jealousy and the well

Illustrative environment; not a reconstruction of this episode

Yusuf’s brothers believe that their father prefers him and his brother. They discuss removing Yusuf and imagining that afterward they can become righteous. One suggests placing him in a well so that travelers may take him away. The plan turns resentment into deliberate harm and postpones moral responsibility to an imagined future.

They obtain permission to take him with them, then leave him in the well. The Qur’an records revelation to Yusuf that he will one day remind them of their deed when they do not recognize him. They return at night with a false story about a wolf and blood on his shirt.

Ya‘qub rejects the account and turns to patience and Allah’s help. The sequence is important: the brothers’ feeling of grievance does not make their action justified, and their proposed later improvement does not remove its wrongness. The story holds Yusuf’s vulnerability, their deception, and the father’s grief together.
