Teaching in prison

Two prisoners ask Yusuf to interpret their dreams, regarding him as a person of good conduct. He tells them that the knowledge is taught by his Lord and speaks of the faith of Ibrahim, Ishaq, and Ya‘qub. Before interpreting, he asks them to consider whether scattered objects of worship are better than the one, prevailing Allah.
He explains that judgment belongs to Allah and that worship should be directed to Him alone. He then gives the different outcomes of their dreams: one will serve his master, and the other faces execution. He asks the one who will survive to mention him to his master.
Yusuf remains in prison for a further period. The passage connects character, knowledge, worship, and practical effort. His imprisonment does not remove his ability to benefit others. Nor does trust prevent him from seeking an available means of release. The chapter keeps both the teaching and the request in view.
