The first return of the brothers

Yusuf’s brothers arrive to obtain supplies. He recognizes them, but they do not recognize him. He provides for them and requires that their brother be brought on the next visit. Their payment is secretly returned with their goods.
Back with Ya‘qub, they request permission to take the younger brother. Ya‘qub recalls what happened to Yusuf and does not simply ignore that history. He later asks for a solemn undertaking to bring the child back unless they are overwhelmed. He also advises entering by different gates, while acknowledging that his precaution cannot override Allah’s decree.
The chapter develops a family’s response to need, trust, and past betrayal. Yusuf’s authority does not erase the earlier harm, and the father’s caution is not presented as a lack of faith. Practical decisions and reliance on Allah remain connected. The next encounter will deepen the test for those who once removed their brother.
