CHAPTER 04

Integrity, evidence, and pressure

Illustrative environment; not a reconstruction of this episode
Conceptual artwork · No prophet is depicted

The woman in whose house Yusuf lives tries to entice him into wrongdoing. He seeks refuge in Allah and moves toward the door; his shirt is torn from behind. An accusation follows when her husband appears, and testimony about the shirt’s tear distinguishes the competing accounts.

The affair becomes a subject of discussion among women in the city. They are invited to a gathering, see Yusuf, and are astonished. The pressure on him continues, with imprisonment threatened if he does not comply. Yusuf turns to Allah, preferring prison to the wrongdoing urged upon him and asking for protection from their plot.

Allah answers his prayer, yet he is imprisoned despite the signs that have appeared. The narrative therefore does not promise that innocence always produces immediate vindication. It records his refusal, the evidence, social pressure, and dependence on Allah. The lesson should be taught without imagined intimate scenes or explanations of motives not given in the passage.
