CHAPTER 17

Banu Qurayzah and a difficult judgment

Illustrative environment; not a reconstruction of this episode
Conceptual artwork · No prophet is depicted

The aftermath of the coalition siege includes the surrender of Banu Qurayzah. Surah Al-Ahzab refers to people of the Scripture who supported the attackers being brought down from their strongholds, and describes killing and captivity. An authenticated narration records agreement to the judgment of Sa‘d ibn Mu‘adh.

Sa‘d’s judgment concerns the fighting men and the taking of their offspring as captives. This is a grave part of the history and should not be concealed behind a vague statement that a dispute was resolved. At the same time, popular totals and detailed scenes require their own evidence and are not assumed from the brief narration.

The account must be studied within its transmitted context of siege, agreements, and adjudication rather than used as a slogan about entire populations. The collection gives the report directly and uses no violent imagery. Responsible historical teaching includes difficult episodes with the same care given to more reassuring scenes.
