Hudaybiyah: an agreement beyond first impressions

The Prophet ﷺ and his companions set out for pilgrimage, but are prevented from entering Makkah. Negotiations lead to the Hudaybiyah agreement, conventionally placed in 6 AH. The lengthy narration preserves the envoys, discussion of terms, and the difficulty some companions feel about the outcome.
The conditions include postponement of entry and arrangements between the two sides. The account of Abu Jandal reveals the painful human stakes of an agreement, not merely a strategic calculation. Umm Salamah’s counsel also appears in the report when the companions struggle to act after the treaty.
Surah Al-Fath describes a clear victory and tranquility granted to the believers. The chapter holds that divine assessment alongside the immediate disappointment, rather than pretending that everyone instantly understands. Hudaybiyah becomes a key lesson in restraint, counsel, fidelity to commitments, and the difference between first impressions and a wider outcome.
